Gever Tulley, founder of the Tinkering School, has a nice TED talk about overprotected kids and five dangerous things we should let them do:
- Play with Fire (I did),
- Pocket Knife (I had one),
- Throw a Spear (I built my own–I still know how I built it and how far it flew),
- Deconstruct Appliances (I did and loved it),
- Break the DMCA (I did not),
- Drive a Car (hmm … not really).
We don’t have something like the DMCA here in Austria but maybe I broke the copyright laws when singing “Happy Birthday”, who knows? But it’s not about breaking laws but all about how easy you can unknowingly break a law (eg. rip a DVD). And driving cars is much more difficult without automatic transmission but also effective.
