ESX 3.5 Update Almost Drove Me Insane

For a while we tried over and over again to install patches on our company’s VMWare ESX 3.5 and failed miserably. Until today! We discovered that the sequence in the install zip file provided by VMWare had the wrong order. I guess I should have realized that much earlier but the error messages were so misleading.

There are only a view steps to do it right:

  1. Setup a web server (Apache is better than IIS, you don’t need to configure mime types) and copy all unzipped patches into a directoy accessible through the web service,
  2. then run “esxupdate -n -r http://myrepo.domain/ESX-3.5-xxxx/ update” on each of these dirs in the correct order (if a required patch is missing install it first),
  3. reboot the server.

Well, this VMWare ESX is a rusty piece of crap, no shit, I am just to lazy to read hundreds of pages to perform an update (oops, just 8). ;)

Let’s see if this solves our license problem?

FX 3.5 Update: CopyAllURLs 0.9 released!

Österreich steigt *nicht* bei CERN aus

Das ist ja unglaublich!

Wenn ich das lese wird mir ja richtig übel… Kann man nur hoffen, dass das nochmal überdacht wird.

Update 1: Es gibt mittlerweile eine Plattform im Netz wo man Unmut kundtun kann, und so wie es aussieht tun das nicht wenige :) - http://sos.teilchen.at/

Update 2: Es sind keine 16 Mio € fürs CERN vorhanden aber 18 Mio für Flüge schon!

Update 3: Der Ausstieg wurde nun doch verschoben!

Endlich Frühlingswetter!

Lange hat es gedauert! Nach den letzten Wochen voller Schnee und Kälte scheint der Frühling endlich da zu sein. Und da rund um mich schon keiner mehr Schnee und Eis sehen kann, jeder nur nach Sonne und Wärme lechzt, verkünde ich hiermit die frohe Botschaft: Der Frühling hat  meteorologisch und phänologisch Einzug gehalten!

Wir können also endlich die Wintersachen wegpacken, längere und hellere Abende geniessen, die Natur heimsuchen und uns die Sonne ins Gesicht scheinen lassen :) .

Gefährliche Rollbretter

Jaja, wir sollten überhaupt alles verbieten! — Das Internet, Computerspiele, Kondome, Mountainbiken, Schifahren, Schwimmen und Tauchen sowieso ;) .

Dazu eine halbwegs aktuelle Statistik aus Österreich, 30 Jahre später:

Rund 196.300 Menschen verletzten sich 2007 in Österreich beim Sport so schwer, dass sie im Krankenhaus behandelt werden mussten. Das höchste Unfallrisiko bestand beim Snowboarden – die meisten Unfälle (39.400) passierten 2007 beim alpinen Skilauf [...]. Männer verletzten sich anteilsmäßig am häufigsten beim Fußballspielen, Frauen beim Reiten und die Gruppe der unter 15-Jährigen beim Skateboarden [...].

Wenn man die Zahlen in Relation zur Gesamtzahl an Unfällen setzt, sieht das Bild wieder anders aus. Von den 44.200 Unfällen der 0–14-Jährigen gehen „nur” 2.100 auf Skateboardunfälle zurück. Das sind weniger als 5% aller verzeichneten Unfälle für diese Altersklasse. Zum Vergleich: Fußball kommt auf 17%, Radfahren auf 16%. — Also alles halb so schlimm!

Was ich nicht verstehe, wie kann man sich beim Nordic Walking schwer verletzen? Und was sind „andere Sportunfälle” (sic!)? (siehe Tabelle 31, Seite 48). Zumindest Segeln ist, laut dieser Statistik, völlig ungefährlich…
