Last sunday I put up curtains in the living room. It’s unbelievable how curtains change a room’s look and feel! The room feels more cozy and it definitely increases privacy when neighbours cannot watch you through the windows

Ein evangelischer Kindergarten in Berlin zog sich die Mißgunst der Eltern zu als diese die Kinder nur noch gegen Abgabe enes Fingerabdrucks abholen durften.
Mit einem 4.900,- Euro teurem Fingerprint-Scanner sollte das Veschwinden der Kinder und Abholen durch Unberechtigte verhindert werden. Nun sind aber die Eltern emotional erregt und die Sicherheit ist keinen Deut verbessert worden. Aber lest selbst.
Eine seltsame Methode. Aber der Staat macht’s ja vor.

Well, at the moment Linz gets prepared for Linz09. I like it when this city is not sleeping as usual and it’s good for Linz to get rid off of its long-time attributes that are heavy industry, polluted air and provincial thinking. They are not true anymore (hmm, provincial thinking is still very common). But after all, Linz has changed a lot in the last 20 years and it’s getting better all the time.
For me Linz is a nice city and really a place worth living, especially Urfahr. It’s not like Vienna and not like Salzburg.
So come visit us! Take a walk through Linz in the snow, visit the X-Mas market and eat our delicious Linzer Torte.

Das beste Beispiel ist DDT. Anfang der siebziger Jahre gab es eine große DDT-Panik. Als Insektenschutzmittel wurde es weitgehend aus dem Verkehr gezogen. Jede Minute sterben weltweit zwei Kinder durch Malaria, und zwar nur deshalb, weil sie von Insekten gestochen wurden, die mit DDT längst vernichtet worden wären. Es gibt weltweit pro Jahr ein bis zwei Millionen vermeidbarer Todesfälle, die auf das Verbot von DDT zurückzuführen sind. Die Leute, die das in die Wege geleitet haben, sind in meinen Augen Massenmörder, die Millionen Menschenleben auf dem Gewissen haben. Immerhin propagiert die WHO seit 2006 wieder den begrenzten Einsatz von DDT gegen Malaria.
Solche Risikoanalysen und deren Ergebnisse werden oft nicht verstanden und noch viel weniger oft umgesetzt.
Join the campaign “Christmas in a shoebox” (“Weihnachten im Schuhkarton”) and bring hope to poor children. It is easy to do and brings joy to the world, which is–in my humble opinion–the most significant value on Christmas.

“Barzahlerentgelt” means something like “charge for paying cash”. So there’s nothing (zero!) to pay but when I pay nothing in cash I’ll have to pay two Euro? Clearly a defect in their accounting.
